Lake and Hillside Garden
The path from the Rock Ledge winds around the north side of the lake leading visitors to many surprises. The grassy hillside is planted with shrubs chosen for their flowering, fruiting and autumn foliage displays. Located on the south side of the Flintstone Bridge, the Metasequoia Grove provides a wonderful sanctuary from which to view the lake and Rock Ledge. From the Metasequoia Grove, one can head east toward the Wisteria Pavilion or west toward the Himalayan Slope to discover the moisture loving perennials surrounding the lower pond. One of Stonecrop's most popular attractions is the Bamboo Grove on the west side of the lower pond. It is a treat to relax on the Flintstone Bench, which is nestled inside the bamboo tunnels created by several species of Phyllostachys. In spring, Gus' Slope boasts a lovely display of Gustav Melquist's early flowering Rhododendron hybrids.
