Bulbs

Each fall approximately 40,000 bulbs are planted outdoors at Stonecrop. The display begins in late February with the first sightings of Galanthus and Eranthis. Sweeps of Crocus, Chionodoxa, Pushkinia, Scilla, Muscari, Anemone, and Fritillaria follow close behind. The drifts of Narcissus grow larger every year as they naturalize themselves. A wonderful representation of Narcissus is found on the Bulb Lawn, southeast of the Lake and Hillside Garden. The Flower Garden is home to Crocus, Hyacinthus, Tulipa, and Allium.

Stonecrop's bulb collection under glass is equally exciting. The Pit House contains a collection of dwarf bulbs that start to bloom in November and continue through May. During the winter months, bulbs such as Lachenalia, Cyrtanthus and Freesia from our South African collection, are moved into the Conservatory as they come into bloom.
